Concrete Wire Mesh

Wire Mesh for Concrete in Detroit MI

It’s easy not to notice the wire mesh that’s buried inside your concrete slabs, but it’s arguably one of the most important parts of a construction project. Wire mesh reinforces the concrete you’re using by increasing its load tolerance and preventing sudden breaks that could send a wall tumbling down. You have a lot of options for which wire mesh you use on a project, and each has its advantages. Before you start your next project, give Detroit Ready Mix Concrete, Inc., a call and ask about which wire mesh is right for the job you have in mind.

Metal Wire Mesh

Wire mesh is usually assembled in place and embedded deep inside concrete structures. As a rule, skilled workers use electric welders to fuse the metal rods into a grid pattern that concrete can then be poured over. This structure acts as a net inside the concrete and helps it bear stress that would otherwise cause it to crack.

Most wire mesh is made from steel. Depending on the needs of the project, you can choose either stainless steel mesh or low-carbon steel mesh. Stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, so your mesh doesn’t rust inside the block. This is important, since concrete must be wet to properly cure, and you don’t want your mesh to expand after the surrounding material has hardened. Low-carbon steel isn’t as resistant, but it is a lot softer than stainless steel alloys. Softer steel generally has better properties for bending and twisting forces, so your concrete can handle greater weight and more shear than otherwise. We help you choose which one is the right one for your project.

Variations on Wire Mesh

This isn’t the only way to reinforce concrete. More finely woven reinforcement can be had with fiber mesh, which is often used in driveways and other residential structures. In addition, many varieties of wire mesh come dipped in hardening agents or coated with PVC plastic. The almost endless variation available to you makes concrete one of the most versatile building materials there is, but it can be a challenge to pick the right reinforcement when you’re planning a project.
